More on Step 6

What does it mean to be entirely ready?  All by itself we can construe it narrowly to mean that we are fully associated with the promise to ourselves that we will not take our will back and let those character defects back in the door of our behavior. Let’s face it some of those defects we are so in love with we never want to give them up.  We can say we will but when it comes down to the nitty gritty we scoop them up like a lost sheep.

We if we remain sober get a release from the lash of alcohol but what about the other defects? Shouldn’t we be granted a reprieve from those too?  It would seem so but once we stop drinking the real work begins but we might have the tendency to fall back on the accomplishment of becoming sober as being enough.

The older non-politically correct version of the Big Book talks about this step separating the men from the boys.  Now I am not a big proponent on adhering to gender-neutral communications because I favor substance of ceremony. So please forgive me I am not a jingoist.  Okay before I get off track on tangents, I think we can get past men and boys and realize that in essence we if we are to experience any kind of spiritual growth that we cannot procrastinate any longer.  If you were like me I was always putting things  off because it was time for the next drink and change for me was always something I would attend to tomorrow.

What is change? What are those defects that we will just never give up? Next installment soon.
